Srinagar: The National Conference (NC) held a meeting in Srinagar on Wednesday to talk about the current situation in Jammu and Kashmir, especially after the recent attack in Pahalgam and rising tensions along the Line of Control.

The meeting was led by NC president Farooq Abdullah at the party office, Nawa-i-Subh. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is also the party’s vice president, attended the session. It started with a two-minute silence to honour those who lost their lives in the April 22 Pahalgam attack.

The party shared on X (formerly Twitter) that the meeting was chaired by Farooq Abdullah and attended by CM Omar Abdullah.

In the meeting, the NC Working Committee passed seven resolutions:

1. Condemnation of violence: The committee strongly condemned the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, including a local. It also criticised the cross-border shelling that killed 23 civilians and expressed sympathy for their families.

2. Demand for special status: The party said it remains committed to restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, which it believes reflects the hopes of the people.

3. Statehood restoration: It urged the central government to bring back full statehood to J&K, as promised earlier in Parliament and noted by the Supreme Court.

4. Support for ceasefire and peace talks: The party welcomed the recent ceasefire and asked both India and Pakistan to stick to peace and engage in long-term talks to stop the violence.

5. Commitment to party ideals: The NC reaffirmed its dedication to its political agenda and said it would keep working for people’s rights through democratic means.

6. Harsh measures: The committee appreciated how the public condemned the Pahalgam attack and helped stranded tourists. It also warned authorities not to make random arrests, trouble young people, use bulldozers, or restrict media, saying such actions can distance people from the system.

7. Concern for JK residents elsewhere: The party condemned reports of students, traders, and residents from J&K being harassed in other parts of India. It urged all state governments to protect their safety and dignity.

The NC said it will continue to speak up about these matters at every possible platform.
