Global protests erupt after Israeli navy intercepts Gaza flotilla

The Global Sumud Flotilla

Protests erupted across the globe after Israel’s navy intercepted dozens of civilian boats attempting to deliver aid to Gaza. The Global Sumud Flotilla, made up of 44 vessels carrying politicians, activists, and humanitarian supplies, was met by Israeli forces in international waters earlier this week.

In Barcelona, where the flotilla began its voyage, around 15,000 people marched chanting, “Gaza, you are not alone” and “Freedom for Palestine.” Demonstrations were also held in Dublin, Paris, Berlin, The Hague, Tunis, Brasília, and Buenos Aires.

The flotilla says 42 boats were “illegally intercepted” and their passengers “unlawfully abducted.” Only the Marinette flotilla continued its course toward Gaza despite earlier engine trouble.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the interceptions, calling them “professional and efficient” and claiming they prevented a “campaign of delegitimisation.” His remarks drew sharp criticism from rights groups and foreign governments.

Belgium summoned the Israeli ambassador, calling the boarding in international waters “unacceptable.” Amnesty International described the seizures as a “calculated act of intimidation,” while Qatar condemned them as a “flagrant violation of international law.”

Among those detained are Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, South African MP Mandla Mandela, and Spanish MEP Rima Hassan. Activists accuse Israel of targeting unarmed civilians delivering food, water filters, and baby formula to Gaza.

Israel has killed more than 66,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, so far, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
