Mirwaiz claims house arrest, says people stopped from visiting martyrs’ graveyard

Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Monday paid tributes to the July 13 martyrs, saying their sacrifice laid the foundation of the people’s struggle for “justice, dignity and human rights.”

In a post on X, Mirwaiz said, “With deep emotion and reverence we pay our respects and glorious tributes to our first Martyrs, who 95 years ago on this day, by their supreme sacrifice laid the foundation of the people’s struggle for justice, dignity and human rights.”

He alleged that authorities had prevented people from visiting the Martyrs’ Graveyard (Mazar-e-Shuhada) at Naqshband Sahib by blocking roads and imposing restrictions around Srinagar’s Jama Masjid. Mirwaiz also claimed that he had once again been placed under house arrest.

“It is painful and unfortunate that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are prevented by force from offering fatiha and paying homage to the martyrs,” he said, adding that “graveyards may be sealed, roads blocked and people confined, but the martyrs live in our hearts and our collective memory for all times.”

He concluded by praying for the martyrs, saying, “May Allah grant them and all the Shuhada-e-Jammu Kashmir the highest place in Jannah. Ameen.”
