Cop killing: AIP likens Mehbooba’s remarks with Gen Rawat’s OGW statement, seeks probe

Muhammad Ayoub Pandith, the slain J&K Police cop.

Mehbooba had said: ‘Agar ye suluk karenge inka, agar inka (police) sabar jawab dega to phir shayad purana waqt na aaye road pe gypsy dekhke logon ko bhagna pade’

Srinagar: Seeking a time-bound impartial probe into death of Muhammad Ayoub Pandith, a police officer allegedly killed by a group ofpeople in Nowhatta area, Awami Itihad Party (AIP) has accused Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti of “crossing her domain by using provoking remarks”.

In a statement issued Friday afternoon, party spokesperson Inam-u-Nabi said, “The circumstances which led to the death of police officer are it-self controversial and suspicious, as how it is possible that an officer of the rank of Deputy Superintendent could roam free without any security guards, in one of the most volatile areas during the dark night.”

AIP, a pro-India party, is headed by lawmaker Er Rasheed who represents Langate assembly segment in J&K Legislature.

“Police have to either admit conspiracy or negligence in the tragic incident,” he said.

A deputy superintendent rank officer of J&K Police was killed after he opened fire on a group of people outside Jamia Masjid in Srinagar around 12 in the mid-night during the intervening night of June 22 and 23 when Muslims across Kashmir were observing Shab-e-Qadr (the night long prayers) during holy Ramzan.

“Kashmiris are tired with condolences and condemnations and it is New Delhi which is directly or indirectly facilitating every killing,” Inam said in the AIP statement.

He said that the chief minister Mehbooba Mufti “must explain what did she mean by saying that anything can happen if cops run out of patience”.

“Mehbooba Mufti’s remarks are as worst as those of Bipin Rawat, who had labelled every Kashmiri as OGW of militants,” he added.

Paying tributes to Pandith, the chief minister Mehbooba Mufti had early today said: “The murder is actually a murder of trust. The officer had allowed his guards to go home.”

“Jammu and Kashmir has one of the finest police forces who exercise maximum restraint while dealing with law and order situation,” she added calling the incident shameful.

Mufti said, “Isse bada sharmnaak vakya koi ho nahin sakta (There is nothing more shameful than this).”

She added, “Agar ye suluk karenge inka, agar inka (police) sabar jawab dega to phir shayad purana waqt na aaye road pe gypsy dekhke logon ko bhagna pade (If they (mob) behave like this, if they (police) run out of patience, then old days will come back when people use to run when they see a Gypsy).”

She also praised the police and said that the police forces are constantly attacked by the militants and so the people should understand that they are deployed for the security and safety of the citizens.

“The officer (Dy SP Pandith) was doing his duty who was there to protect his people,” she added.

In a stern warning to Kashmiris Indian Army chief, Gen Bipi Rawat, had said that “all those help militants are their Over Ground Worklers (OGWs)”.

The AIP also condemned those trying to drag Mirwaiz Umar Farooq into the controversy and added, “how is Mirwaiz responsible for something while he was in the Masjid and if police force couldn’t save their officer what Mirwaiz has to do with the tragic incident.”
