Srinagar: The government of Jammu and Kashmir shifted Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Shesh Paul Vaid to the post of transport commissioner in its headquarters in Jammu on Thursday, Greater Kashmir reported. Dilbag Singh, a 1987 batch Indian Police Service officer, has been assigned the post of the director.

A Home department order issued disposed Vaid’s services to the general administration department for further posting as the transport commissioner.

Vaid had been appointed as the Director General by the previous coalition of the PDP-BJP government and was an IPS officer of 1986 batch.

The order, issued late in the evening stated: Dilbag Singh, the director general of Prisons, shall hold the charge of the post of DGP in addition to his own duties till a regular arrangement is made.

In a separate order, the general administration department posted Vaid as transport commissioner with headquarters at Jammu. The post of transport commissioner has been declared equivalent to the status and responsibility of the post of DGP, it said.

Earlier this week, Dr B Srinivas replaced Abdul Gani Mir as head of the Criminal Investigation Department, the Intelligence wing of the Jammu and Kashmir police.

A source in the government told Greater Kashmir that the government of India as well as advisor to the government on security affairs K Vijay Kumar were keen on effecting changes at the top police level.

“Vaid was already informed by the government that he will be replaced,” the source informed.

Earlier, Vaid had taken to Twitter to dismiss ‘speculative news articles’, specifically NDTV’s report that the Union Home Ministry of India was not “satisfied” with the state police and was looking for a replacement for Vaid.

“@JmuKmrPolice has been fighting a proxy war for decades which requires a lot of courage & determination of the men & officers of JKP. Speculative articles which undermine their morale should be avoided. @ndtv as regards to transfer, it’s routine matter & prerogative of the govt,” he had tweeted.
