After six days, curfew lifted in Kishtwar for three hours, internet services restored

Srinagar: Mobile Internet services in curfew-bound Kishtwar region of Jammu and Kashmir were restored on Monday after remaining suspended for the past six days, a senior government official said.

The curfew, which was imposed in the town and adjoining areas following the killing of senior RSS leader Chanderkant Sharma and his security guard inside a health centre, was also relaxed for three hours from mid-day, the official said.

He said that heavy rush of shoppers was witnessed in the main markets during the relaxation period, which passed off peacefully.

Earlier, authorities had relaxed the curfew in a phased manner for one hour on April 12 and again for a few hours in different phases on Sunday.

On April 9, unidentified gunmen entered inside the hospital and shot dead an RSS leader while he was on duty in the hospital where he works as a medical assistant.

In the attack, his PSO was killed on the spot while some civilians fell unconscious leading to the assumptions of civilian’s death.

The RSS leader’s killing triggered violent protests with angry mourners ransacking the office of the senior superintendent of police, prompting authorities to impose strict curfew in the communally-sensitive town and adjoining areas, following which the Army was called for a flag march.

The Jammu and Kashmir had said that they detained several ‘over-ground workers’ (OGWs) for interrogation in connection with the killing.
