On Friday, dozens of Indian Americans have gathered at Lafayette Square, the park located in front of the White House, protesting against the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the United States, Aljazeera reported.
As per the report, protestors were seen holding placards that read “Save India from fascism” and chanting slogans against Modi’s visit.
The protesters rebuked Modi over human rights violations, persecution of Muslims and other minorities, new farm laws in India and the crackdown in Kashmir.
“Modi is currently in the US to attend the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, or Quad Summit, with President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga. The four-nation Quad alliance aims to check China’s growing military and economic power globally,” the report further read.
However, this Saturday Modi will address the ongoing United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Later on Friday, Biden will host his first bilateral meeting with Modi after winning the presidential elections in the United States.
Before Biden-Modi meeting, the protesters outside the White House called on the US president to keep to his campaign promise of making human rights a central feature of the American foreign policy.
The activists raised the recent surge in the attacks and killings of religious minorities, especially Muslims and Christians, by the members of Hindu right-wing groups in various parts of India, reported Aljazeera.
Pertinent to mention that on Thursday at least 800 families residing on about 4,500 bighas of land in Assam’s Darrang district were evicted as part of the Assam state government’s drive against “illegal encroachments.”
A disturbing video purportedly from Assam shared by news organisation Maktoob Media shows police firing on unarmed civilians after locals protested against the eviction drive.
At least three people were reportedly killed in yesterday’s police firing.
