WB Govt invites junior doctors for final talks with CM amid protests over rape and murder case

West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant has issued a fresh invitation to the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum (WBJDF) for a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday to address the ongoing protests by junior doctors.

These protests stem from their demands for justice in the horrific rape and murder of a junior doctor from R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The meeting is scheduled for 5 pm at the Chief Minister’s residence in Kalighat, South Kolkata, the same venue where a previous meeting on Saturday failed to resolve the issue. The Chief Secretary requested that the same delegation from Saturday’s meeting arrive by 4:45 pm.

In the email, the Chief Secretary emphasised that this is the final invitation for a dialogue with the Chief Minister, stressing that the meeting should be approached with an open mind. He clarified that there would be no live-streaming or videography of the meeting, as the case is under review by the Supreme Court, but the minutes would be recorded and signed by both parties.

As of the time of reporting, the junior doctors, who are continuing their sit-in protest at the state health department’s headquarters in Salt Lake, had not yet responded to the meeting proposal.

A crucial Supreme Court hearing on the case is set for Tuesday, with senior advocate Indira Jaising representing WBJDF.
