211 people arrested in Awantipora and Pulwama in drug-related cases this year, reveals official data

Pulwama: In 2024, the Police in Pulwama and Awantipora successfully tackled the growing drug problem with a series of crackdowns on drug dealers.

Official data shows that narcotics like heroin, cannabis, poppy straw, and pharmaceutical drugs have been prevalent in south Kashmir, especially among the youth, official data, accessed by Greater Kashmir, revealed.

Pulwama Police registered 64 cases under the NDPS Act, arresting 105 people involved in drug trafficking. Six drug dealers were detained under the PIT NDPS Act.

Authorities also seized three properties worth Rs 59.2 lakh and 15 vehicles linked to drug trafficking. The police confiscated large quantities of narcotics, including 186.30 kg of poppy straw, 108 bottles of codeine, 91.12 kg of ganja, 537.67 gm of heroin, and cash worth Rs 65,600. They also destroyed 1 kanal and 16 marlas of land cultivated with poppy plants.

In Awantipora, 69 NDPS cases were registered, with 106 accused. The police seized narcotics including 780 gm of charas, 32.57 gm of heroin, 103 bottles of codeine, and 24.8 kg of poppy straw. Four properties worth Rs 1.01 crore were seized.
