Karnataka: Caste census report placed before cabinet, probe ordered into BJP-era graft allegations

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

The Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes has submitted the long-awaited caste census report—officially titled the Socio-Economic and Education Survey—to the state Cabinet.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated that the report will be reviewed at the next Cabinet meeting scheduled for April 17, as some ministers requested more time to study it.

Initially commissioned in 2015 during Siddaramaiah’s earlier term, the survey was completed by 2016 but shelved by successive governments.

The final report was handed over on February 29, 2024. Community pressure, particularly from the Vokkaliga and Lingayat groups, has delayed discussions on its findings.

Separately, the state government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into alleged 40% commission scams during the previous BJP administration. Based on the Justice Nagmohan Das Commission’s findings, the SIT will probe the issue over two months and submit a report.

Preliminary findings reportedly confirm irregularities in the release of funds, issuance of no-objection certificates, and tender processes across several public works
