Massive wildfires sweeping through the outskirts of Jerusalem have prompted Israeli authorities to evacuate thousands within 24 hours, with at least 13 people injured so far and no fatalities reported. The fires erupted on Israel’s “Memorial Day for fallen soldiers”.

The Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has warned that rapidly spreading wildfires near Jerusalem could reach the city, as he declared the situation a “national emergency”.

Dramatic visuals circulating online show flames engulfing areas along Route 1 — the main highway connecting Jerusalem and Tel Aviv — with thick smoke blanketing nearby hills. Several persons were seen fleeing their vehicles to escape the blaze.

Over 160 firefighting and rescue teams are battling the flames, aided by dozens of aircraft and helicopters. The Israeli military has also joined the operation. However, dry conditions and powerful winds are hampering efforts.

Officials described the incident as one of the worst fire outbreaks the country has faced. The Fire and Rescue Service has barred public access to national parks and forests in affected areas. Major roads, including parts of Route 1, have been shut down.

“This may be the largest fire Jerusalem Hills has ever experienced,” said Shmulik Friedman, commander of the Jerusalem District Fire and Rescue Service. He warned that containment could take a long time and that wind speeds might soon reach up to 100 km/h, worsening the situation.

The Israeli Air Force has deployed C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, capable of carrying 18,000 liters of fire retardant. At least two such planes have already dropped materials over the flames. Nearly 3,000 acres have reportedly burned so far.

Due to the severity of the fires, Israel canceled its official Independence Day ceremony in Jerusalem. A pre-recorded version of the event was later broadcast.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cautioned that the fires could soon reach Jerusalem itself, driven by strong western winds.

Israel has requested international assistance. Ukraine quickly responded by sending an aircraft, while Spain, France, Romania, Croatia, and Italy have also pledged support.
