Omar Abdullah condemns global silence as Israel attacks Iran

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah strongly criticised the muted response of Western powers following Israeli strike on Iranian territory early today.

He remarked: “Today, Israel did what Russia did in Ukraine… Iran didn’t give any reason to be attacked.… If the world’s powers remain silent, it’s a very sad thing.” Abdullah also urged the Indian government to ensure the safety of Kashmiri students currently in Iran, noting “their families are deeply worried.”

On June 13, Israel launched Operation Rising Lion, deploying over 200 aircraft and striking around 100 military and nuclear sites in Iran, including Natanz and facilities near Tehran.

The strikes reportedly killed multiple senior Iranian commanders – among them General Hossein Salami, General Mohammad Bagheri, and General Amir Ali Hajizadeh – as well as nuclear scientists.

In response, Iran launched over 100 drones at Israel, triggering airspace closures and widespread regional tension.

Iran condemned the strike as a “declaration of war” and vowed severe retaliation; the UN Security Council convened, urging urgent de-escalation .

Major global players – including the EU, NATO, US, UK, Australia, Turkey, and several Middle Eastern nations – issued statements calling for restraint and dialogue.

Due to this, oil prices surged over 7-8%, reaching above $75 per barrel on the fear of regional instability. Global markets slid; defence stocks rallied while airline indices tumbled due to disrupted airspace.
