Rasheed seeks revocation of ban on student unions in his meeting with Governor

Srinagar: MLA Langate, Engineer Rasheed on Saturday, during his 45-minute long meeting with Governor Mr. N. N. Vohra expressed deep concern over the ‘conspiracy’ being created against Article 35-A by ‘certain sections’.

Article 35-A of the Indian Constitution is an article that empowers the Jammu and Kashmir state’s legislature to define “permanent residents” of the state and provide special rights and privileges to those permanent residents.

Rasheed told the Governor that “the sentiments of people over the issue and said that the said law is in practice since 19th century and it has nothing to do with a particular community or the region and it was the people of Jammu who persuaded the then Maharaja to form state subject laws and not allow anyone to purchase land in the state for the larger interest of people of the state.”

Rasheed requested the Governor to ask the Government to hold an emergency session of the state Assembly to discuss this ‘significant issue’.

He also requested the Governor to apprise the union Government not to “encourage forces, who are keen bent to drag J&K’s special status to the Supreme Court.”

He requested the Governor to facilitate a conducive atmosphere in universities where students can express their views without violence and sought revocation of ban on formation of student unions.

Rasheed also discussed various developmental issues pertaining to Langate constituency including measures being taken to develop Bungas and Leepa as prominent tourist destinations.

Although, for temporary span of time the ban was revoked in 2007, it was imposed again in 2009 by the NC-Congress coalition, after students protested against the alleged double rape and murder in Shopian.
