The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) reported on Monday that 207 of its staff members have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the start of the Israeli conflict on October 7.
“207 UNRWA staff members have lost their lives in Gaza since the war began – including while performing their duties,” the agency stated on X.
UNRWA emphasized that those killed were professionals from various fields, including engineers, teachers, and medical staff, all of whom were dedicated humanitarian workers.
In recognition of their contributions, UNRWA honored their sacrifices on World Humanitarian Day, stating, “On World Humanitarian Day and every day, we remember and pay tribute to them all.”
Despite a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire, Israel has continued its aggressive assault on Gaza following a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
The Israeli offensive has resulted in the deaths of nearly 40,100 Palestinians, primarily women and children, and has injured over 92,600, according to local health officials.
More than 10 months into the conflict, much of Gaza has been devastated, with a severe blockade limiting access to food, clean water, and medicine.
Israel faces genocide charges at the International Court of Justice, which has ordered an immediate halt to its military actions in Rafah, where over 1 million Palestinians had sought refuge before the city was invaded on May 6.
