Israel has announced that it is preparing for the relocation of Palestinians from Gaza, despite widespread global opposition to former US President Donald Trump’s plan to depopulate the war-torn region.
However, as of Thursday, there were no visible signs of such preparations on the ground.
Egypt has launched a diplomatic push against the proposal, warning that it could jeopardise its peace treaty with Israel, officials told Associated Press. The Palestinians have strongly opposed the plan, fearing that Israel would block the return of refugees.
The Trump administration has since softened its stance, claiming that any relocation would be temporary. However, US officials have provided little information on how or when the plan would be implemented.
Meanhwile, US. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit Europe and the Middle East next week, a senior State Department official was quoted in AP report as saying.
Following his recent trip to Central America, Rubio will attend the Munich Security Conference in Germany before travelling to Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia from February 13 to 18. The official, speaking anonymously, noted that none of these Arab nations support Trump’s proposal to remove Palestinians from Gaza.
