Madhya Pradesh: In a bizzare turn of events, following the release of the Bollywood film Chhaava, which showed Mughals burying gold near Asirgarh Fort in Burhanpur, people in Madhya Pradesh embarked on nocturnal treasure hunts, spurred by rumors of hidden Mughal-era gold.

The movie release has also led to debates over its historical accuracy and unexpected events off-screen. The film, which depicts Chhatrapati Sambhaji’s struggle against Mughal emperor Aurangzeb has drawn both praise and criticism.

Armed with torches, shovels, and metal detectors, locals gathered around the historic fort, digging through fields in hopes of unearthing valuable artifacts, vidoes of which are already viral on social media sites.

This frenzy was ignited by the film’s depiction of the fort and suggestions of concealed treasures, leading to widespread speculation among the community.

However, local authorities quickly intervened. Police dispersed the crowds and issued warnings against unauthorised excavations at the protected archaeological site, stressing upon the fort’s historical significance and the legal implications of such activities.

Asirgarh Fort, with its rich history tied to Maratha and Mughal conflicts, has long been surrounded by legends of hidden treasures. The recent cinematic portrayal appears to have reignited these age-old myths, prompting the recent surge in treasure-hunting attempts.

Meanwhile, the film has come under fire from the Shirke family, who claim it misrepresents their ancestors. Deepak Raje Shirke has accused the film of portraying Maratha commanders Ganoji and Kanhoji Shirke as traitors in Sambhaji’s capture. The family has threatened protests and legal action if corrections are not made.
